Fotevikens Viking Museum – A Day with the Vikings

Viking Musuem

Just a 45-minute drive from our farm lies a very special destination for families who want to experience history up close: Fotevikens Viking Museum. This open-air archaeological museum takes you straight back to the late Viking Age, around the early 11th century – an exciting era deeply rooted in southern Sweden.

A Perfect Family Day Out

We started our day with a visit to Hallongården – a charming farm shop and café where we enjoyed a delicious lunch. From there, we continued on to the Viking Museum.

As soon as you pass through the gates of the Viking village, it feels like stepping into another world. The reconstructed settlement features 23 authentic buildings – including a bakery, a weaver’s hut, and a blacksmith’s forge. Each house is staffed by people in historical clothing who are happy to explain how life worked back then. Our kids, Henri and Hauke, were especially thrilled – they got to make their own Viking-style necklace to take home as a souvenir.

One of the highlights was the live theatre performance, offered several times a day in both Swedish and English. It brings the Viking era to life with humour and energy. You can even chat with one of the “real” Vikings afterward – and it truly feels like time travel.

Activities for All Ages

Just outside the village walls, there’s an activity area for kids and adults alike. You can try your hand at archery or axe throwing (all supervised and safe), and for the little ones, there’s a “mini archaeologist” corner – if they dig up a treasure, they’re rewarded with their very own Viking coin. A lovely keepsake!

Finishing the Day with Burgers at Smokey Barbeque

After our museum visit, we had dinner at Smokey Barbeque – a relaxed, family-friendly spot with delicious burgers. It was the perfect way to end the day. Bonus tip: you get 10% off your meal if you show your Viking Museum ticket!

Our Conclusion

Fotevikens Viking Museum is a fantastic destination for families with children – or for anyone interested in history and daily life during the Viking Age. The mix of hands-on activities, authentic surroundings, and friendly atmosphere makes it a truly rewarding visit. And best of all: it’s just around the corner from our farm!

Our tip: Wear comfortable shoes, bring a water bottle – and don’t throw away your museum ticket, it’ll come in handy again at dinner.
